“Light and Shade: Serious (and Not so Serious) Poems” – a Guest Post by Kevin Morris

I am profoundly delighted that my kind friend, Kevin Morris, whose imaginative poetry inspires me with its wittiness and creativity, has composed a guest post for my site. Please, do not hesitate to follow his excellent blog: K Morris – Poet

My sincere thanks to Veronica for her kindness in allowing me to write a guest post for The Waves of Poetry. I am an admirer of Veronica’s work, and I’m delighted to be hosted on her excellent blog.

In August 2019, I published my “Selected Poems,” https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WW8WXPP/

“The Selected Poems of K Morris” comprises a selection of poems composed by me between 2013-2019, most of which deal with serious matters of life, the passage of time and nature.

In contrast, my soon to be released collection, “Light and Shade: Serious (and Not so Serious) Poems” does, as the title suggests, contain both serious and humorous verses.

Life is, as the title encapsulates, comprised of moments of great seriousness which are counterbalanced by a lighter, more humorous side. One can not always be serious, nor is it possible to be constantly laughing. Life is, in essence, a mixture of the 2, as reflected in “Light and Shade.”

A number of the poems in “Light and Shade” deal with nature themes. Take, for example, my poem “I Walk Amidst These Windblown Leaves,” which runs thus:

“I walk amidst these

Windblown

Leaves.

How time has flown.

I shall in beauty drown

And think on these

Fallen leaves,

Which now strew the ground.”

Whilst walking through the fallen leaves in autumn, I fell to thinking on how man (as with the leaves) soon falls and dies. On the one hand, this is a sad thought. However, on the other hand, we should “in beauty drown” whilst we have the chance to appreciate the wonders of this earth.

As already mentioned, “Light and Shade” is a mixture of serious and humorous verses. A number of my humorous poems deal with a young lady by the name of White. Take, for example, the below short poem:

“When a young lady whose name is White

Developed a ladder in her tight,

A window cleaner called Ken

Swapped her a pen

In exchange for that ladder in her tight.”

(“Light and Shade: Serious (and Not so Serious) Poems,” by Kevin Morris will be published in late June/early July, and will be available from Amazon as a Kindle download, and in paperback format).
